In many cases when oversized and heavyweight cargo is to be transported over long distances rail freight is often preferred to transportation by truck.

If the cargo placed on open rolling stock succeeds loading size limits, such cargo is considered oversized. Examples of such cargo are various turbines, generators and their parts, transformers, reactors, frames and supports. Possibility of oversized cargo transportation via rail road is determined by the cargo size and freight car loading capacity.

When it is not possible to use regular wagons, semi wagons or platforms, transporter wagons are used. Rail transporters by producers operating in Russia and CIS countries are divided in different types: platform, header, pothole, jointed, adhered. Transporter loading capacities vary from 55 T (four-axle) to 500T (thirty two-axle), with a number of wheel pairs: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 28, 32.
